Setting Up Two-Factor Authentication

A step-by-step guide to configuring two-factor authentication (2FA) for your Shifts account to enhance your security.

What You’ll Need

Before setting up two-factor authentication, make sure you have:

  • Your smartphone with an authenticator app installed (like Google Authenticator, Microsoft Authenticator, or Authy)
  • Your current password
  • A few minutes to complete the setup process

Step-by-Step Setup Process

1. Access Security Settings

  1. Log into your Shifts account
  2. Click on your profile icon in the top-right corner
  3. Select “Profile” from the dropdown menu
  4. Navigate to the “Security” tab

2. Enable Two-Factor Authentication

  1. Click the “Enable Two-Factor Authentication” button
  2. Enter your current password to confirm your identity
  3. Choose your preferred 2FA method (Authenticator App recommended)

3. Setup with Authenticator App

  1. Open your authenticator app on your smartphone
  2. Scan the QR code displayed on your screen
    • If you can’t scan the code, click “Can’t scan QR code?” to get a text code you can enter manually
  3. Enter the 6-digit verification code from your authenticator app
  4. Click “Verify” to complete the setup

4. Save Your Backup Codes

  1. After verification, you’ll be provided with a set of backup codes
  2. Save these codes in a secure location (not on your computer)
  3. Each backup code can be used once if you don’t have access to your authenticator app
  4. Click “I’ve saved my backup codes” to continue

Using Two-Factor Authentication

Once set up, you’ll need to provide a verification code each time you log in:

  1. Enter your username and password as usual
  2. When prompted, open your authenticator app
  3. Enter the current 6-digit code displayed in the app
  4. If you don’t have access to your authenticator app, use one of your backup codes

Troubleshooting

Time Synchronization Issues

If your codes aren’t being accepted, your device’s time might be out of sync:

  1. In your authenticator app, look for a time sync or settings option
  2. Sync the time with the server
  3. Try generating a new code

Lost Access to Authenticator

If you’ve lost access to your authenticator app and backup codes:

  1. Contact your system administrator
  2. Verify your identity through alternative means
  3. Request a 2FA reset
