Shift Marketplace Overview
Shift Marketplace Overview
Discover how the Shift Marketplace allows employees to post, claim, and exchange shifts with qualified coworkers while maintaining proper staffing levels and skill requirements.
What is the Shift Marketplace?
The Shift Marketplace is a centralized hub where employees can offer shifts they can’t work and pick up extra shifts posted by colleagues. This feature promotes flexibility while ensuring shifts are covered by qualified staff and all business requirements are maintained.
Marketplace Benefits
- For Employees: Gain flexibility in your schedule, trade shifts when needed, and pick up extra hours when desired
- For Managers: Reduce administrative workload by allowing employees to handle routine shift swaps
- For Businesses: Maintain proper coverage and compliance while giving employees more control
The Marketplace Interface
The Shift Marketplace is accessible from the main navigation menu. The marketplace is divided into three main sections:
Available Shifts
This tab shows all shifts that are currently available for you to claim. Each listing includes:
- Shift date and time
- Location details
- Position/role requirements
- Any special notes from the original employee
You’ll only see shifts that you’re qualified to work based on your role, skills, and location assignments.
My Listings
This tab shows shifts you’ve posted to the marketplace with their current status:
- Open: Still available for others to claim
- Pending: Someone has applied to take your shift, awaiting approval
- Filled: Successfully claimed by another employee
- Cancelled: You’ve withdrawn the listing from the marketplace
My Applications
This tab tracks shifts you’ve applied to take, with statuses including:
- Pending: Your application is awaiting approval
- Accepted: You’ve been assigned to the shift
- Rejected: Your application was declined
How the Marketplace Works
For Employees Posting Shifts
- You post a shift you’re unable to work
- Qualified colleagues can view and apply to take your shift
- You’re notified when someone applies (or a manager may approve automatically)
- Once approved, the shift assignment transfers to the new employee
- The shift disappears from your schedule and appears on theirs
For Employees Claiming Shifts
- Browse available shifts in the marketplace
- Apply for shifts that fit your schedule and qualifications
- Wait for approval from the original employee or a manager
- Once approved, the shift is added to your schedule
- You’re now responsible for working that shift
Eligibility Rules
The marketplace enforces several rules to ensure proper coverage:
- Only shifts you’re assigned to can be posted
- You can’t claim your own posted shifts
- Only employees with the proper role/qualifications can claim certain shifts
- Employees must be assigned to the relevant location (if required)
- Claiming a shift can’t create scheduling conflicts
- Business-specific rules about prohibited role pairings are enforced
Manager Oversight
Depending on your business settings, managers may:
- Receive notifications of all marketplace activity
- Need to approve all shift swaps before they’re finalized
- Have the ability to cancel or modify marketplace listings
- Override certain eligibility rules in special circumstances
Best Practices
For optimal results when using the Shift Marketplace:
- Post early - Give colleagues ample time to see and apply for your shifts
- Include notes - Add helpful details when posting (e.g., “Early morning shift in quiet location”)
- Check qualifications - Ensure you meet all requirements before applying for shifts
- Honor commitments - Once you claim a shift, you’re responsible for working it
- Communicate directly - Use the notes feature to explain special circumstances
